Frequently Asked Questions:

1.  How old (or young) can a boy be to join Cub Scouting?
Cub Scouting is for boys in the first through fifth grades, or 7 to 10 years of age. Boys who are older than 10, or who have completed the fifth grade, can no longer join Cub Scouting, but they may be eligible to join the Boy Scouting or Venturing program.

2. Must I be a U.S. citizen to join Cub Scouting?
Citizenship is not required of youth or adult members.  The Boy Scouts of America offer programs in many different countries. Our program is open to all English- speaking boys with some connection to the international community in the Basel area. You do not have to be an American citizen to be in our Pack.
The World Organization of the Scout Movement provides contact information for all national Scouting organizations on its Web site at

3. What is Cub Scouting?
Cub Scouting is fun! No matter what grade you are in, first through fifth, it can be a blast. Do you like to learn by doing? This is just the place. You can learn to tie knots, set up a tent, shoot a bow and arrow (archery), cook a meal on a campfire, send a secret code to a buddy, build a birdhouse, and hike. Best of all, you earn rewards for doing these things in Cub Scouts.

4.  What is the Pinewood Derby?
Racing in a Cub Scout derby is great fun. You'll get to design your racing vehicle, work with a parent to build it, and see it perform on race day. Win or lose, you'll take pride in having done your best. When you race in a Cub Scout derby, you learn craft skills, the rules of fair play, good sportsmanship, and things you will remember all your life. The main types of derbies are the pinewood derby, raingutter regatta, space derby, and Cubmobile derby.
